Hello Everyone:

Just acquired a N-8 from a friend as a gift. He bought it online and has no idea as to the previous service provider. Is there anyway to unlock this or do I have an attractive paperweight? I have the IMEI number.

All unlocking services require that I input the previous service provider. I think it was purchased from an online Asian supplier who said it was unlocked.

Not sure if this is posted in the right place? Help!

 If you post the phones product code here I will check the servers and tell you whether it's an unlocked model or not. Just type *#0000# into the phones dial pad and look for an eight digit code beginning with 05******. Whatever you do, don't post your IMEI number by mistake.

Thanks for your response, but on inputting the code that you gave, the only numbers I got were as follows with Chinese characters between each row of numbers. I use the '*" to represent the Chinese

 It's bad news I'm afraid. You've got a Chinese cloned N8 on your hands. It's not a genuine Nokia N8.

Hopefully your friend might be able to return it for a full refund.

The first step is to determine the type of handset. If it is a CDMA phone, it does not use SIM cards, there is no need to unlock. The second step, once you determine it is a GSM phone, to determine whether it is really locked. The easiest way to do this is to borrow a friend's SIM card, a different service provider to see this on your mobile phone SIM card works.

 It's already been established that he has a cloned N8 so it makes no difference if the phones locked or not.
