I dropped my N8 in the toilet one week ago, and the technical assistance said that it couldn't be possible to restore it...

So I let it dry for some days, and now it's working almost perfectly, I tested almost everything, wifi, bluetooth, camera, flash, sound, HDMI, and everything is working...

BUT... the proximity sensor is bugged, it detects like it's near something all the time...

When I call someone, the screen goes black instantly because of the sensor, so I can't end the call without unlocking the screen manually...

When someone call me, the screen keeps black, and I can't see who is calling or answer the call without unlocking the screen manually...

And it's really annoying... So I sent it again to the technical assistance, and again they said the cellphone could't be restored, I said that the cellphone was now working properly, I showed to the woman that I could turn on the cell, and asked that I just wanted that they look at the proximity sensor, but I was ignored...

So, does anyone had the same problem? There is any way to fix it? Please help me!

I repair DECT cordless phones for part of my job, and TBH once a phone has had water in it the faults can be endless!
Count yourself lucky that you still have a working phone mate!

Water gets under the IC's (chips) and as the tracks are so tiny in mobile phones now, the corrosion that starts can cause weird faults that can be impossible to trace.
If the repair centre have said "no" it's probably because they don't want to try the repair!
You have to bear in mind that your warranty is null and void because water ingress is not a warranty fault, so quite often they say that because they simply cannot guarantee fixing the problem.

It could be the sensor, or it could be moisture still under one or more IC's, there could be corrosion damage as the pcb's are all multilayered now.......too many possible issues to make it worthwhile looking.

The way I see it you have 3 choices -
  • 1. Live with the phone as it is
  • 2. Try completely disassembling the phone and cleaning it using Isopropoalcohol (IPA), then leave it to dry in a warmish well ventilated place. I use this method at work because it degreases and also disperses water. It is readily available but DO SO AT YOUR OWN RISK.....realistically the phone works so you do have something to lose by trying it. It shouldn't harm the phone, but as I don't repair the Nokia brand for a living I can't guarantee that.
  • 3. Claim off your household insurance if the policy excess is worth the effort (probably not in most cases)

In the end only you can decide what you want to do  Huh

I know that the warranty doesn't cover if water enters in the cell, but I asked to they fix it that I would pay it if the fix wasn't about 25% or more of the price of the cell, but refused...

It's more annoying that I thought, now my alarm rang, and I woke up, and looked to the cell, and the screen was black, seriously, 5:30 AM, I can't think right, I kept looking to it about 10 secs until I remember that I have to unlock the screen manually even to turn off the alarm Sad

If I find the tools to open it, I'll try what you said about Isopropoalcohol, but I don't have much hope...

Thanks, and just one more question, what's the name of the tool to open the N8? It's a torx?
