I tried playing several MKV files now on the N8. Sometimes it says it just cant support the format, and other timesI've seen it play it with sound but the screen is black.

When I trid to hook it up to my 1tb HD, it said that it was damaged, and couldnt be viewed. Tho when I hook the very same HD up to my media player (popcorn A10) it works flawlessly. Same when hooked up to my computer.

Does anyone have a solution to this? Its really fustrating =/

You need to remember the mkv is a container, not an encoding format.
I would suggest recoding your video and/or audio streams contained within the file to a supported format.

The n8 won't support every container and format, but it supports a large number of them. Unfortunately, you'll always find a combination it won't support. Same thing happens on PCs as well (only in that case, you can update the codecs etc).

As far as the HD, was it externally powered? USB otg only has limited power, so it won't be able to power a HD. You can either use a powered hub, or use a HD with external power. In your case, assuming it isn't powered externally, you'll need a powered USB hub.

Oh, another thing - must be FAT formatted (ie. not NTFS, ext2 etc)

Cheers....

Can you recommend an app for the PC to convert my mkv's to a supported container?

Thanks in Advanced

Well, assuming the disk talked about (1TB) is a multimedia disk, got to be powered.. i have a verbatin 1TB multimedia too, and works normly, u just cant read disks formated in NTFS to support files bigger then 4GB.. toooo  bad

as for videos, you can use several converteres, i use 1 free, like SUPER © and i normaly use encoder h.264, dont change resolution, the container could be MKV and sound maybe AC3 or ACC or MP3 ( if you want sound 5.1 surround, just try small videos with other formats, i never tryed).
i played a MKV with the bitrate 7000kbps in the N8 with no problem of lag at all.. smooth but... dont take the bitrate speed to high in your conversions because of the 4 gb limit, around 2000 i think is good.

that was my try to help Smiley
