After months of happy camping with the N8 I had a major problem the other day when two things happened at one - the N8 completely crashed and one of the bottom plastic clips that connects the base section to the phone snapped leaving only one screw holding the bottom on.

I was on a 10 day job in the field and needed my phone all the time!  As the phone was completely unresponsive (with a weird flipped horizontally screen display with only the clock displaying, as through looking in a mirror) I had no option but to try and remove the battery to reset it.  After rounding both screws to smooth bores (!) I eventually gave up and had to snap the base off.  I removed the battery and put it back together with some gaffer tape and it's all good now.  But...

Anyone got any ideas how I can remove the screws?!  And is it just a case of removing the screws and replacing them and the base? (ebay).  I read somewhere that one shouldn't ever fully remove these (stupid, annoyingly soft metal, proprietary crap) screws?

Any help appreciated Smiley

There are screw drivers called torx screw drivers that you can use to open the screws for the phone. Also, you could have pressed the power button for about 8-10 seconds. This will turn the phone off even if it's unresponsive. This is actually a feature of the phone in case it becomes unresponsive. You won't have to take the battery out.

Well I did try holding the power button down for a long time, many times and it was 100% unresponsive.  I had no option but to remove the battery - poor design though, why not just use normal screws, why go all Apple on us?  Warranty or no warranty - it's the owners choice to open it up or not, and there are better ways of telling if it's been opened rather than putting in 'soft as putty' torx screws.

A mate owns a computer repair shop so I chucked it his way and he managed to undo the screws with the appropriate screw driver.  Question is, can I remove and replace these rounded screws with new ones without having to take anything apart?  I read  / and can see that the screws go into small retaining threads that can apparently fall off the other side if you remove the screws fully...?

Great news about the Symbian update coming - Anna / Belle.  No sign of it in the UK yet.
