Whenever i make or receive a call, the screen locks and goes black. I would have to use the slide unlock switch to either let me see whos calling, or to use the screen again. Is this normal ?

I got it back from nokia repair twice already like this.

I also get random reboots every now and then, and also the battery overheats and drains the power...

sigh, i dont wanna send it back again for the 3rd time ...

I had a problem(and many others apparently) that when I made or had a call and put it to my ear and the rest of phone was touching my face it kept cutting off or puting the other person on hold. I looked on the forum and the only thing one can do is lock the screen!! Is yours a new N8? It seems that they might have sorted the problem out.

A Lot of posts are already talking about reboot problem...
This is being solved easily by debranding the n8

There is a tutorial for it in hacks and tricks..
It could / should solve your lock screen problem too.

i thought debranding was for phones that were from the carrier...

i have a N8 in the USA which is already debranded, purchased directly from nokia ...

I had the same problem and exchanged my phone.  I'm in the US and my phone was already "debranded".  This is bound to be a known issue with Nokia as I've seen the same issue mentioned several times.

I am experiencing the same issue with my N8.
Already did hard boot, settings restore and a software update on the phone but it seems that this problem keeps on persisting....
very annoying as you cant end a call when the person u phone has voice mail active, this chow up ur airtime....
Soon my N8 is going to meet the wall if this continue.

So is there anyone with a solution to this irritating problem with the N8??

That isn't a problem... It hapened to me sometimes but it's normal... If you clean the sensor of light it never hapens... If you don't clean the sensor, it can't detect very well the light because of dirtiness... So your phone put the screen off like when you put the phone near your face...
It never hapened with me again...

I've just posted for this same problem. I got the phone a month ago, didnt' notice that the locking mechanism for SIM was broken, so they had the whole insides replaced, just got it back after two weeks and it started doing it. DAMMIT! So I take it nobody knows what to do about this? I am not buying this "clean the sensor" stuff. the sensor is clean and the screen goes dark or stays dark even when I'm dialing way away from my ear... So. cleaning is not it....
