I know, not a good start as I only got the phone on Monday, but it froze on me yesterday, haha.
But it was because I had loads of apps open as I was messing about with it and then when I tried to send a text it was just too much, I didn't know about the closing all apps button in the options haha.

But anyway, if you phone does ever crash, just hold the on/off button for approx 8-10 seconds and it will vibrate 3 times. Then wait a few seconds and turn it back on, everything works again Smiley

I thought I'd put this on here as it took me ages to find out how to reboot my phone as I seem to be the only one to have this problem already haha

I did not know about the close all option, but I found it. For the record: Display all running apps, tap and hold one of them. A menu pops up with two options, close and close all. Very handy.

I AM EXCEEDINGLY UPSET. NOKIA DIDNT BOTHER TO INFORM US OF THIS FREEZING THING AND IT HAPPENED AT A CRITICAL TIME AS I WAS RECIEVINGAND SENDING LIFE AND DEATH INFORMATION. I HOPE NOKIA READS THIS, YOU NOW HAVE ANOTHER DESATISFIED CUSTOMER.PROBABLY WILL BE THE LAST NOKIA I OWN. AND I'M SPEADING THE WORD. " IF YOU HAVE CRITICAL TIME SENSITIVE INFORMATION YOU NEED TO TRANSMIT OR RECIEVE, NOKIA IS NOT THE PHNE FOR YOU"

I AM MILDLY DISGRUNTLED ABOUT A PRODUCT THAT ISN'T ABSOLUTELY PERFECT.

I like caps too.  They're fun.

I've had it freeze with certain apps, but this is an app issue, not a specific issue with the phone.

If you want to investigate the issue, see if you can repeat it.  Figure out what actions you must do to make it happen.  Then contact the owner of the app to notify them of the issue.

Is there a specific issue with the phone?  Maybe.  Maybe the operating system has some poor code that slowly eats up the available memory.  I mean it took Microsoft over 10 years to fix their crap.  But guess what?  It's nothing a simply reboot doesn't fix.  Turn off the phone and restart it.  Tada, good as new...just like people have been doing with PCs for the last 20 years.

Yes, you shouldn't have to restart a phone.  It's not that complex.  The downside is humans are creatures of error.  Even good programmers will mess stuff up.  I can't outright blame the phone, because it depends on what's actually causing the issue.  Is it oem software or is it an app you downloaded?  I don't know.  In the end, you have to at least blame the right thing. let's admit it...

N8 has its moments but it's one buggy device. There are times that the device just hangs even it was blazing fast just a while ago.

From the looks of it, N8 still performs as if it is a prototype. Now that I'm comparing it with my older 5800, both of the devices just run at similar paces.

Here's a radical solution which worked for me:
1. Back-up the devices contents (especially those lovely pre-loaded wallpapers)
2. Hard-reset the device (press: volume down + camera button + menu button until you feel) a vibration.
3. Hook your device to a PC, launch Ovi Suite, then hit the update icon to reinstall its firmware.

Voila! You have a zippier Nokia N8.

In fairness to Nokia N8, the device doesn't mess up without "provocation".

I experience the 'freezes' when launching too many apps and when installing files made for th s60v5 devices ( probably a compatibility issue)

Hi,

I also had and still have these freezes : sometimes my nokia restarts itself on its own.

At the begining I had installed a lot of applications so I made a hard reset to restart with a clean machine.

the problem is Now with a hard reset and no new aplications installed, I still have my N8  doing restart sometimes for no reasons.

SO now I would like to reflash it with nokia firmware but I don't now how.

I Found nothing on ovisuite to reflash it, the update only update somes applications but not the firmware.

can you tell me how to reflash the firmware ?

I reflashed my N8. It has more difficult problem - it dies and you can't restart it. I really need to cool it to turn on. After this I flashed it with Ovi PC suit - it said no new firmware updates, however it's option to reinstall same firmware. Anyway it didn't help me. Sad

All of these things happened to me when I got my new phone. What I found out is that Nokia released an update on these apps and after updating.. Voila! No more freezing on the apps...

Try updating your firmware...

If your N8 still freezes/restarts after reflashing it with new firmware via the Ovi Suite, then I guess it's defective and a valid reason to have the phone replaced with a new one. Smiley

My phone still hangs every now and then (not good) which makes me wonder if the 680MHz processor w/ graphics co-processor is enough or just a minimum requirement.

I'm crossing my fingers and hope that all of these will be fixed on the next upgrade at the end of the year, and the big updates (browser, keyboard, homescreen) on February. If things still don't work our by then, I'm going to have it replaced by Nokia.

Nokia should rigorously test the apps submitted at the app store before approving them for mass distribution. The notorious apps, which I think, that tend to crash the phone and you must avoid are: Socially and Nimbuzz.

The built-in mail client itself tends to slow down the phone when refreshing/downloading new mail...

buggy, buggy, buggy. Oh why do I still hang with my N8. Haha. Wink

So do you think that 2 or 3 restart per day is normal with the N8 and might be solved with the next firmware or it is happening because my N8 is defective ?

Did you get this from SMART? When I got mine from SMART, I immediately encountered the freezes but after the app update, they are all gone. I think you should have it fixed in the Service Center...

My mail client is working perfectly. The exchange can easily send and receive messages....

Last night my N8 froze. i wasent using any Aps i was on a call. Anyway i turned the phone off. But i couldnt turn the phone back on, it wasent vibrating or doing anything this lasted about 40 mins.. The only way i could get it to come back on was once i got home to put it on charge - then it would turn on. (the battery was fall and didnt need charging)

Is there something special i should be doing to turn the phone back on? very frustrating. I tried a long hold a small hold of the on off switch but nothing.

thanks

Have you updated the firmware. You can do it like this:

Menu->Applications->SW Update

This will tell you if you need the update. After reading a few posts about freezing, when I got mine, I updated the FW immediately, and have never had a freeze. I once got a "memory full" message when running lots of stuff (was trying to push it to see how far it would go Smiley ), and it got a bit laggy, but no freeze/crash. Laggy is understandable - even your PC goes slow when running lots of stuff.

The only issue I have (freeze/power related) is that if I charge overnight with the phone off, the alarm goes off in the morning as expected. If I press snooze, then it freezes - not a biggy, I just use low power mode overnight now.

On the plus side, I get 2 days use from a charge, and 1 full days use if I really hammer it - constant web browsing, downloading taking pictures etc.

Its a pity people are having these problems, this phone rocks.

Cheers....
