I've only had my N8 a week and decided to add some tunes, however when I sync'd it to my music files via Ovi it loaded loads ie 1000s of tracks, I think it would have carried on loading music files till the memory was exhausted if I hadn't realized what it was doing and pulled the plug, anyway now I need to remove the files I don't want and leave the ones I do.
However it doesn't appear possible to delete files using just the phone (atleast I can't see a delete button) it seems files need to be deleted via Ovi, problem is the files on the phone aren't showing on Ovi, although they are on the phone, all it is showing is the music files in the Ovi library.
So I'm a bit stumped as to remove the unwanted files, any suggestions?

Can you not simply open Windows Explorer and go to My Computer\Nokia N8-00\Mass Memory?

On that drive, there should be a Music folder where Ovi Player has copied all your mp3s. You should be able to delete them manually that way.

Hope this helps.

Well done that man, I should have thought of that myself, the PC will just see it as a external drive so I can  access it direct, worked a treat, although it would be better if you had the option to do it from the phone.

You can use the file manager on the phone.

I've been getting a different message when trying to delete my files from the phone:
"File is corrupt, operation cancelled"

There are no songs in the albums, but it won't let me delete the folder and it keeps showing the folders still

Anyone know a way around this?

All methods of deleting the folders have failed, from the handset only the album folders exist from the music player, nothing shows up under file manager or when connected to a computer

Still got this problem! Anyone else have this apart from myself and skywalker?

Yes, same problem.

Had a load of trouble just syncing music with ovi and USB.. (It tried to copy hundreds of files when I didn't ask it to)

Now I deleted all the unwanted songs from my phone, but the albums are still there. And they can't be deleted because "file is corrupt" and they're just taking space. I fucking hate this operating system.

Deleted via PC as well, the folders are not there, I also refreshed the music library, the folders are still there. And I'm not about to make a phone reset/format just to get rid of some icons, this is ridiculous.

It just gives this error over and over again (had to take pic with a backup phone with horrible cam)

Note:

What you need to do, is connect the phone to your computer via USB. Then click on the right upper corner of the touchscreen, click USB and select 'mass storage'.

Then go to:

\private\10281e17
\private\101ffca9

And delete the thumbnails. When you refresh the media library, the extra icons will be gone.

Sadly it has to be done manually because Nokia has not provided a fix.

Perfect! Thanks blueberry, +rep!

Does this mean I would need to always do this everytime I add and remove albums from the phone though? Hope Nokia is reading this forum and solve this issue in the next update!

Yes, you have to do it every time manually. Sad but that's how it is.

I wrote a program in Qt so that the os would remove thumbnails every time music library is updated (and then read them again) but it crashes and the .sis would need signing tools for many people to use it.

Hopefully the next big firmware update (around E7 launch date) will address this issue.. It's already been mentioned on official Nokia forums.

Very very unfriendly functioning Nokia... many benefits of N8 ... many nuisances and very many extra "touch strokes" to do simple things.  Very disappointed.  Will follow instructions below to delete music... why is the process so cumbersome?
