When I'm at university I can't connect to the uni's native WLAN. It just stays stuck on 'connecting', I asked one of the computer guys and he said that because the OS is symbian it's not good enough to handle the security settings of the network, I thought surely this can't be right because Nokia N8 is quite an advanced and popular smartphone.

can't connect to the uni's WLAN. stuck on 'connecting', he said that t's not good enough to handle the security settings

This statement by the IT guy at the Uni tells me he doesn't know much/anything : I have security turned-up to all kind of options on my home WiFi - the Phone didn't bat an eyelid connecting.    Have you tried connecting with something else like a Laptop? - perhaps there is some un-reported problem with the WLAN.    I would generally suggest that the N8 is even more capable of automatically connecting than a Win 7 Laptop [I use both and Win 7 annoys me]     - Hey I have been using McDonalds Free Wifi since my N95 !

it's not a problem with the wifi because other people connect with their devices all the time, it's something to do with the security because there's another network which doesn't have security and i connect to that one fine (but no internet on that one). I checked the network details of the one i can't connect to and the phone lists the security as WPA/WPA2, any ideas?

silly question, but I presume you have the secure network settings (password etc) that will allow the phone to actually connect

I thought about that but I don't think so because everyone else seems to connect to the network easily and we weren't given any password.

when I go on Settings>Connectivity>settings>destinations>Internet>"the network name" I set the WLAN security mode to WPA/WPA2 and it still doesn't connect.

If there is a security setting on the wlan, then you need the pre-shared key in order to connect, otherwise it will be a public network which any "joe-bloggs" could connect to, and wouldnt require the security setting
