Since its announcement, the Nokia N9 has been a hot topic. At Nseries, we wanted to know how well the N9 really stacked up as the big brother of the Nokia N8. To find out, we highlight 10 BIG differences between the two.

1. Screen

The Nokia N8 has a capacitive touchscreen that measures 3.5 inches while the Nokia N9 has an additional .4 inches at 3.9.

2. Resolution

Screen resolution for the N8 sits at 360 x 640 pixels while the Nokia N9 has increased to 480 x 854

3. Size

The N9 is slimmer than the N8. The dimensions for both phones look something like this:

N8 – 113.5 (L) x 59.1 (W) x 12.9 (D) mm

N9 –  116.5 (L) x 61.2 (W) x 12.1 (D) mm

4. Sound

While both phones support a 3.5mm phone jack, the Nokia N9 can boast the world’s first smartphone with Dolby digital plus decoding and Dolby headphone post-processing technology.

5. Camera

The N9 sticks with the winning formula that made the Nokia N8 stand out as a camera phone. The obvious changes though are the N9 packs an 8mp camera with Carl Zeiss optics, autofocus and dual-LED flash compared to the 12mp camera of the N8.

6. CPU

While the N8 runs on a 680Mhz ARM 11 processor the Nokia N9 has been given more punching power running a 1 GHz Cortex A8 CPU so you can expect a smoother experience.

7. Operating System

On release the N8 supported the Symbian^3 OS. The Nokia N9 will run off MeeGo v1.2 Harmattan

8. Swipe

The N8 operates off of 3 customisable homescreens which give you the ability to use up to 18 possible widgets and arrange them as you see fit. The N9 uses a swipe home views system. These are 3 views which help keep things simple. They are split between:

1) The application view – this is where you have access to all your apps
2) The multi-tasking view – the N9 can run up to 100 apps simultaneously so you needn’t be worried about multi-tasking without experiencing any lag
3) The events view for social networking feeds, notifications, calls, texts or calendar events

9. NFC

The Nokia N9 comes pre-loaded with NFC, which if you have not already seen, works like magic with the new Nokia Play 360, taking just a tap to sync up.

10. Buttons

The N8 has a button placed in the bottom left-hand corner which operates as a ‘home’ button. The N9 has no buttons! Making it the world first pure touch-screen smartphone.
