Had my N8 for less than 24hrs, on Vodafone contract. How do I get it to use WLAN as it's primary means of connecting to internet, i would like it to automatically log on to known wireless connections & prompt me to use WAP if Wireless not avaliable. Is this possible & how do I achieve it. I can get a wireless connection easily enough but when i try to log on to internet it reverts to WAP. Also the browser on my phone is Vodafone, can I download the Nokia browser & if so where can it be found. Got a feeling this is going to be the first of many questions, any help would be great.

Hi, thanks for your reply.
WLAN is already set to 1st, i've been trying to sort this for hours now with no luck. Tried on both home & work wireless networks, both connect to phone ok but phone still insists on connecting to web via WAP. Have no problem connecting xbox, blu ray player, lap tops and even N95 on my wireless connection at home. Getting really frustrated with this phone now and i've only had it 24hrs. I can only assume it's a fault with the phone, i have a seven day return policy with vodafone, not sure i'm confident enough in the N8 to replace it with another, i,ve had nokia smart phones since the N92 but based on my experience with this phone so far thinking it might be time to change to a Htc desire hd.

My wireless connection problems were sorted with help see link

http://discussions.europe.nokia.com/t5/Nseries-and-S60-Smartphones/First-48hrs-with-N8-problems-so-far-help-badly-needed/m-p/783091/highlight/false#M230941

Sadly however however if you read all the thread on the above the link you will find that although the connectivity issues were sorted shortly after my N8 just shut down completly , blank screen & won't turn back on, dead.

Phone lasted 48hrs almost to the minute.

For me at least N8 ownership so far has not been a great experiance, great potential but yet to deliver!

I have set my N8 to connect to my wi-fi at home. the problem is that it keeps on searching for, and connecting to, the wi-fi. How do I set the phone to connect to the wi-fi only when I require it?

You may set connectivity/settings/Data use in home network to 'WLAN only'

Personally i have set 'Data use in home network' 'automatically' combined with
Connectivity/Settings/Data use in home network/Destinations/Internet:
Homenet priority 1,
Vodafone GPRS priority 2 and
ISPGPRS priority 3

This works fine with me and automatically switches to WLAN when i am at home

hope this helps

i think i have the same problem. my phone keeps reconnecting to wifi network available, even if i have widgets offline, email offline, or any apps offline.
if i restart the phone, it stops.
i think it's a bug. i am waiting for the software update, maybe this problem will be fixed also

Later edit : if your n8 tries to connect obsesivly to the wifi from work/home, try to delete the hot spot from priority list. it will stop. make sure widget is offline and email is set not to sincronize.

I have no trouble with my N8, but I've seen two different complaints in this topic.

1) Problems connecting to the wi-fi network at home

The only reason it will connect to the 3G data instead of the Wi-fi if there is a problem with the wi-fi settings, are you guys that are having this problem managing to connect manually through the wi-fi connection? You could try the nokia connectivity analyser to check your WLAN settings.

Other reason, is that you are at a blind spot of the wi-fi on your home, you have to have in mind that the range of a mobile is not like the range of a laptop.

2) There are some complaining about always looking for a connection

There are some apps that runs in background that will connect to the internet if needed, for instance Google Maps with Google Latitude on, the only way to avoid that is to turn the app off.

Best Regards,

Mauricio
