I use my N8 for connecting internet to my Notebook through OVI suit. But there is a option for using N8 as modem. How to activate that?
Thanks.

Yes; You can install it as a bluetooth modem. It's plug 'n' play, so just make the bt connection, and it will happen. Then you have to make a new internet connection. I don't know what OS you use, but in WinXP you go to connections and hit "new connection". You then choose dial up connection, and then make sure it uses your bluetooth modem. You have to enter in the settings somewhere the APN of your service provider (the phone company you use for your mobile connection). You can just google that. Usually no PW or ID needs to be entered, but you need to enter something in the number to be dialed field. It's something like #99 something, I can't recall. You can google that too. That number tells your phone to use gprs/3g/3.5g/etc. in stead of the old fashioned dial-up-connection.

Or You can use JoikuSpot and so your N8 will become a wireless modem.

Is it discoverable by the wireless provider if you use that app ?
is it free to download this app ?
how many devices would it support ?
Thanks

I don't understand the first question. I use my carrier's internet connection to set up my N8 as a wireless modem. So my laptop will see the N8 as a WLAN. The light version is available for free in Ovi Store.

Tried Joikuspot with my Xoom, but Android devices will not use ad-hoc networks.  For some reason BT will pair both devices but not tether them.  Next step is to try USB cable connection.

I believe that some older Android devices can connect to ad-hoc networks, but that it was disabled in the newest versions.

There's a guy on xda-developers that has managed to get his Xoom to run with Joikuspot by patching one of the Android system files.

The process may be more complicated than you want to go through, but if you're interested, go to the xda-developers forums, Motorola Xoom section, and search the "Xoom Android Development" forum for "Got Ad-hoc wifi working on my Xoom".

Good luck.

Thanks for the advice.  I've decided to try one of the mifi devices, where you plug in a sim card and get what is effectively a 3.5G to wireless conversion.  It's a "proper" wifi and not an ad-hoc, so the Xoom should see it ok.
