After using my new n8 for two-three days, some questions arose. Firstly - how can I make sure that I'm using wifi, not 3g. I cantfind any notice during any session. Secondly - how can I check and change the interval at which my social networks update?
Thanks beforehand!

I can address one of your questions:  To ensure use of wifi at home, go into settings/connectivity/settings and set your data use option to "Automatic".  Assuming that you have wifi enabled and available it will use wifi first.

As to notification, such notifications are fleeting.  When you bring your phone out of sleep mode in range of a wifi source that is enabled on your phone, you will see a message saying connecting to XXXX where XXXX is the name of the wifi access point.  After that is connected, if you open your browser, it will say "connecting via XXXX" very briefly as you go onto the Internet.

One thing to watch for is program specific settings that also may govern how a program gets data.  For instance, I also use Opera Mobile 10.1.  You can set it to access in several ways, but by default it was set to access over my phone connection, not the available wifi.  This would change depending on your programs, of course.

i don't know the setting for social, but when you get connected to 3g or wifi, it's an icon that appers on the top screen, everytime you connect.
you can also go : Menu > Setting > Conectivity > Connection Manager and there you can see what's on use : wifi or 3g. In settings > Network destinations (sorry it it's not the specific words, my language is romanian) you can set the priority of the "Internet" destination, and choose you wireless first, and than your 3g.

Hello, I have a similar question about these settings.

Is there any possibility to make application ask me which connection to use? I am used to it from my N95 and it was very comfortable for me. Before each connection it asks me. Because when I am at home, I want sometimes use wifi and sometimes 3G. Thanks for answer...

Ted, I would be very careful about setting the Data use in home network to Automatic. I prefer the setting" Wi fi network only".There are some issues with the connection on the N8. Two weeks ago, while I was at home, Podcatcher download all my radio podcasts using ATT instead of the home wi fi. As I use pay as you go with 200 mb for 20 bucks, all the datas were pumped out like a bat out of hell, and because it was not enought, ATT withdrawn an additional $60!

yes, I know that I can change a priority, but it would be much easier when it asks me before each connection as on N95

To always choose the data connection you have to go to:
Settings
Connectivity
Settings
Use of data in local Network
Always ask
Or if you want to make sure you want only wifi and you don't mind changing that every time you go out of range your wireless connection just choose only wi-fi.

thanks for answer, but it dont solve my problem :-( . I dont want to choose if to connect, but I want to choose type of connection before each connection. It always connects me with type of connection I set in priority as a first.

Ok, now I understood the issue.

I am not sure if it will work because I've not tested it.

I think you just have to create a new Destiny, without Access points and make it the standard.

The N8 will not be able to connect and it will have to ask then you choose the connection you want

That way you will have to choose between

WAP
Internet
Internet Empty (For instance)

Give a feedback if it works

...
good idea, thanks, but unfortunately doesnt work :-( .

when it cannot connect on fiction wlan as first, it automatically skips on the next connection type.

There will be problem with those priority. If there wouldnt be no priority as on N95, than phone will ask before each connection. But N8 doesnt provide that.

I think you might have done something wrong.

I've managed to do a kind of test of the method. At my Garage I've no signal of my operator or my wifi, so it is like having a blank connection destiny or a failed hotspot and the N8 asked me for another suitable connection, just as it happened in the N95 8Gb.

Ok, Now I did this to my N8 to confirm the theory and it worked

1) Go to Settings
2) Connectivity
3) Config
4) Destinys (or the last option inside config)
5) Options
6) New Destiny
You will create the destiny
Internet 2
7) Options
Cool Standard Connection
Choose Internet 2

Now everytime an app that uses the standard connection of OS won´t be able to connect, Opera for Instance, and you will have to choose between WLAN or Data.

But there are several apps which have internal configurations of the Standard connection.

Socially will not work with this trick, because you can't choose a destiny in Socially.

All others you will have to manually set the Internet 2 as Standard connection.

Best Regards,

Mauricio

thanks, I have done it exactly that way even the first time. But point 7) is unclear. I have there no option ,,standard connection" maybe there is the mistake. I can only set priority of connections and when that dumb phone cant connect first way, it automatically tries second way. Maybe I have different firmware?

I've translated the command into englisch, maybe I got it wrong.

It is the first command under the show all open applications, or the second line after you tap into options.

But this trick will only work if the apps are configured to use the standard OS connection or configured to the Internet 2 destiny, as I told before, otherwise the apps will bypass the OS settings.

But you don´t have to change the configuration of every application, for instance Google Maps can stay only with 3G, the same goes to the Sports tracker, etc...

Best regards,

Mauricio

Buna, daca esti roman si esti amabil sa-mi ma lamuresti cu doua lucruri ai face un n8 user ff fericit;
Multumesc!
