At the same time, it is also the first time to be equipped with a high-definition HDMI interface in all series of Nokia Smartphone, users can use their N8 to connect to the large screen TV play high-definition video. I know N8 can support various video formats, but it still can not support a lot of popular video formats like Flash videos(FLV and SWF), MKV, DV formats, RM, RMVB and so on.

And, the most suitable video format that N8 can support is MP4! Thus, if you want to play higher quality on your N8, you should better convert other videos to Mp4 so that you can get higher compatible format for your N8.

By the way, it is my personal idea

I hope this topic will help all of the members of this forum and if you all like, please increase my reputaion!  Thanks a lot!

I have just converted many of my AVI films and put on N8.
They work brilliantly.

I found a 'Video Converter for Nokia Smartphones' programme.
http://nokia-video-converter.en.softonic.com/phones

Nokia N8 isn't in the list of supported phones but I changed the N80 specs and saved it as N8.  The specs to be aware of are changing the default sound from Mono to Stereo.  All other settings have drop down boxes to change profiles.  (I didn't know enough about them to mess with them though).
In the main window, always select the first 'frame' option - this gives you full frame playback on the N8.
Each film takes about 20 minutes to convert and the converted file is about 200mb.

Although it's free, you have to pay after 15 days.
I liked it so much I went to buy it but Google said the site contained Malware so I bailed.
I will uninstall when I'm done.

There have been no ads, watermarks, pop-ups or other unwanted or unexpected issues.

 Just for general information. MKV and AVI are NOT video formats.
They are containers or wrappers for video formats ( such as MP4 ) and audio streams as well as .srt files ( subtitle files ).

 So the N8 can play MKV and AVI as long as the video and audio streams contained within the MKV or AVI have been properly encoded.

Hope that clears things up a bit.

@nicejane.

 As previously mentioned, it all depends on what video format is contained within
the MKV, and one or two other factors. Here are a few basic settings to get .mkv working.

- scale size <= 720p

- CABAC reference frames <= 4 or CABAC off

- file size < 4GB (or you won't be able to copy it to FAT32 mass memory on your phone)

- framerate <= 30 fps (NTSC.).
                <= 25 fps (PAL).

Another question is the sound stream.  You should re-encode it to AC3 (Dolby Digital in other words).

Hope that helps.
