Open up the main menu with the button on the front of your unit, then open applications then open Office.  In office you will find a copy of a dedicated adobe pdf reader and a (crippled) copy of Quickoffice.  Quickoffice will open Word files, though the version that comes with the phone only supports reading of office files.  You need to buy and upgrade (about $20 US) to get a version that will edit Word files.  I got the full version but I am less than happy with it. It doesn't scale so you can only see a window into the document and you are scrolling back and forth just to read a single line.

I far prefer the Docs to Go application that I had on my old Palm Treo.  AFAIK, Docs to Go doesn't have a version that supports Symbian 3.
