hello guys,
Some questions before buying this wonderful device for Christmas :

1. Can we hack the boot of the N8 and boot on the USB port in order to use the phone as a computer running Linux Debian from usb or a micro sd card ?

2. Can we hack the mobile like the N95 to install unsigned apps , especially garmin gps I got from torrents ?
In case it´s not possible can we download all ovi maps in the device or micro SD and then used the GPS without internet and are the ovi maps detailed enough in Europe?

3. I see this phone is playing many video extension by default Divx etc. but can the phone handle to play a full divx (2 h) smoothly and without any lags and not only tron?

4. Last but not least does OVi has a good vnc viewer free app in order to use the N8 as a remote control for my PC TV ?

Thanks in advance for your answers.

1 dunno, keep me informed

2 yes, have read somethin about that already. And yes, you can download the maps in the phone memory so you dont need internet. In the Netherlands they are more then detailed enough

3 havent tried. Saw some peeps that had problems with NTFS system try the search button.

4. Sorry, havent seen that either. Maybe you can program something yourself;)

1. I dont know
2. Sure, you can. And you can sign each app too.
3. I usually watch Tv shows in divx of 40-50 min without any problems.
4. I dont know if Ovi has it. But with my previous Symbian s60v3 phone i used to control my pc with a free VNCViewer, so I think we'll get it for S^3.

Garmin working 100% on my N8, version 5.00.60.
V5.00.50 had screen issue when turning landscape, but fixed in 5.00.60.

As to the other hacks, no idea.

hy guys thanks for your feedback on the garmin , the ovi maps and the divx player capabilities.
I also know the vnc  viewer on symbian s60 3rd but it was pretty crap actually.

I m also very interested to use n8 as a real pc ( through usb port and hdmi) but i can see that nobody has hacked the boot of symbian 3^ yet.

i hope it will come soon i hope . I also think I will buy it anyway.

nokia has by far the best hardware still ( my old n 95 was 5 years old and it was doing everything more than the first iphone who came two years afterwards ) . In the meantime the company gave me a blackberry not with 10 percent of
n95 capabilities. that sucks

I think the Garmin that works on N8 is the Garmin Mobile XT.

I´m very interested in such application like VNC viewer or RDP client for N8, if anyone knows about something like that please let us know about it!!!!

Regards.

After some intensive search no usable vnc viewer were found.

I 'm also willing to boot ubuntu linux on N8 but also couldn't found anything yet.
