Nokia has just released the first Symbian^3 update for N8, C6-01 and C7. The new 1.1 version brings tweaks over the messaging department plus office editing for the N8, but no new features or overall improvements. We still remember Nokia promising regular updates of Symbian^3 with new features

Unfortunately the first official update brings only this:

    * Meeting requests can be accepted directly from email invitations
    * Maps integration in email, which means people can view the meeting location on the map when the address is mentioned in the location field in the invite

Those are available on all three Symbian^3 handsets. The Nokia N8 also gets Quick Office 6.4 with enabled editing and zoom in/out capabilities in Word. The update also pre-installs the games Need for Speed Shift, Real Golf and Galaxy on Fire.

Ok, we bet minor updating is better than no updating at all, but come on! Sybmbian^3 is in dire need of web browser improvements, seamless text and other performance-related stuff. There were some promises about new options for the N8 camera too. These are things that really hurt usability on those devices.

There is more to it than that. Reread the thing? AFAIK the update for the N8 isnt until the start of next week, and iirc there are some ui improvements (probably the finger slide homescreen one) and underlying changes which wont really be visible to the end user.

And dont forget that this probably was the update schedualed for january, and another bigger update was set for mid february, with the browser and 50+ fixes/changes or whatever, and the laterthisyear update to The Update Formerly Known As Symbian^4.

Upgrades and additions:

* Social 1.2 - photo and video upload improvements, though 1.3 is now available as a patch to this, as we reported on here
* Ovi Store 2.0 preloaded - direct access, no launcher anymore
* New Ovi Maps data (#25) - bringing new navigable countries, though note that this is still v3.4. If you want multi-touch and wi-fi country preloading, then head to Nokia Beta Labs for v1.6
* Quickoffice 6.4.166, with free editing licence on the N8, and improved zooming functions, Adobe Reader updated to 2.5.653
* Web updated to 7.2.8.10, minor fixes
* Big update to Nokia Email; performance improved; more visible 'unread emails' flag added to homescreen widget; meeting requests can be accepted directly from email invitations; maps integration, which means people can view the meeting location on the map when the address is mentioned in the location field in the invite
* Multiple general performance improvements
* Dialler now works in landscape mode
* Landscape qwerty layout altered to promote '@' character in many language versions (some other character placements have been juggled)
* You can now 'Change wallpaper' directly from the 'Options' on the homescreen(s), rather than having to go via 'Edit homescreen'
* Enhanced music player screensaver (shows track name and bar in cycled colours)

Fixes:

* Charging indicator keeps going up when you disconnect charger under some circumstances
* Battery indicator algorithm tweaked to be more linear (i.e. the old 'six bars and then it dies ten minutes later' syndrome is hopefully banished)
* Problem with video streaming from web sites
* Smoother video camera zooming (remember there's intelligent interpolation as well, so this isn't a gimmick)
* SMS message stuck in outbox
* MMS messages fail to send and get stuck in outbox
* Device does not restore all settings after retuning from power saving mode
* Screen image sometimes corrupted when you scroll up/down in Quickoffice
* Minor N8 charging issues
* Music player and Photos issues
* Set "save sent messages" as 'No', but actually they still get saved.
* Breathing light now optimised to 'breathe' only when screensaver is set to none or the phone is in powersaver mode
* Animated screensaver option removed
* Charging indicator erroneous when charging with power off
* Web browser crashes when encoding is set to "Thai (TIS-620)"
* Problem with National Geographic 'web TV'
* Phone freezes when you insert the letter É inside a Social network
* All Widgets disappear after updating Social network and you set "Thai" UI

It takes some time for carriers to put the updates it seems..
If you want to have yours up to date, you'll need to flash your phone.

hello,

saw earlier as an improvement as having dialler in landscape.. that is fine ideea, considering that phone can be placed in a carholder as landscape position for navigation reasons...
Then you can dial the number or choose from agenda, all is well untill the phone actually makes connection.. then it switches to portrait, no more landscape.
I think is weird, isn't it ?
maybe nokia need more polish wax applied to this option..

have a good day,

those updates of ovi maps are for program or new roads? becouse on ovi maps my country has only main roads and I have to use garmin. It works fine but it is not smooth as ovi maps.

hello,

why can't i make calls in landscape mode ? because no one think of it so far ?
what is then the usefullness of the new improvement ? as said, i have the phone in a cradle stick to my windshield using it for navigation purposes. If nokia let me dial, using landscape mode - as phone recognizes landscape mode and changes aspect, yes ? - why not having it done properly manner ? Or if phone is in landscape, once call came in, it goes in portrait mode and is difficult to see who's calling, one have to rotate phone to see who's calling. I'm sure this is now easy to do and pretty effective, don't you ?
i just want to have the complete feature, well done, and only because they started working on it.. why not going all the way down to it ?

have a good day,
radu

radu,
when you try to talk with someone it is natural for you to switch phone into portret mode. I also agree it should work in landscape mode becouse the phone has handfree option and it is easier to use it in a car. I just tryed to explain why they probably think it is best to have only portret mode for making calls instead both. I hope they will fix this it the future updates.
you too have a nice day.

g,

agree with you, but once they started the landscape dial pad tweak, should follow the package... landscape, handsfree, carholder, these are key words.
wish they would think of this on PR2.0...

have a good day,
radu
