will the N8 play songs and videos  bought on iTunes?

Or will I have to convert either of them before transferring them to the N8?

Yes. I first synchronised the iphone with itunes on my laptop. How much I hated having to download a new version of itunes every time I just wanted a simple backup! Last time for me! Then I took the usb cable and synced the N8. All my itunes music went to the N8, and also the album covers. Excellent!!!

I am sorry, I did not have any videos on my iphone. In any case, you can transfer the video files for sure because, there we go again, apple did not allow you to move files freely, but nokia does. The only question is probably if you can play the video files on N8.

Can you clarify how you sync'ed the N8 with iTunes? I wasn't aware that you could do it. Did you mean, you opened iTunes, plug in N8 to the PC via the USB cable and N8 pops up on itunes left-hand panel and then you just sync the iTunes library with N8?

I only ever tried to copy my mp3 collection using Ovi Suite but it's not as nice as iTunes.

No problem here with me. I used ovi player and it just imported everything from my itunes. I hope it will allow me to select though because I do not like the whole library to import. But no conversion needed at all. I even tried mass storage and just transferred the songs I like from my itunes folder to the phone's folder without any problems at all. Just played the itunes format.

As for the videos, that is not possible. They will have to be unprotected (not converted, since the format is compatible to N8) and to do this I will have to buy a software. I don't need this as I have utorrent where I can download avi movies for free, and the format is supported in the N8.

You can sync music onto your N8 directly from itunes using third party tools. There are a couple mentioned and instructions at http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/features/item/How_to_Sync_music_to_your_Nokia_5800_XpressMusic_with_Apple_iTunes.php
I have used itunes agent in the past to sync to an older nokia phone and it worked fine. However i have got so fed up with itunes that i now use foobar to manage my music
