I feel USB charging is quiet slow... I charged my phone from empty, after 3 hours, it is still not fully charged.

I would like to know is there a difference between the speed of normal charging using a power outlet, and USB charging via a laptop/computer?

Thanks,
Dean

Interesting comparison.  The battery will have an inherent limit.  It would be interesting to see the charge rates of both methods.  My guess is that it will end up about the same, but it would be neat if there was a difference.

While I have not tried to do a comparison test, my subjective feel is that the charging rate when the unit is plugged in to a computer via USB is lower than it is when you are charging through the charge connection.  Of course, this would be hard to measure accurately in the field since it would be all but impossible to start at the same point - absent a totally flattened battery - a condition that I am not willing to induce in a rechargeable device.

I have noticed this with my Sony Vivaz, it charges a lot slower via usb compared to mains.  But I don't have the nokia n8 yet so can't say for that device, but it could be like the vivaz in that regard.

Charging is 3 times faster with the AC charger in comparisson to the USB.

Just tried it, empty to full 1 hour on mains AC, empty to full on USB 2.5 hours

USB charging works fine when I keep N8 connected to my laptop during office hours. Then it is always full battery when I leave from office.
Also in night the needed 3+ hr is not a problem.
But yes, for fast charging AC charger is needed.

Would think USB charging shd not be the first choice way to charge your phone. Shd be the back up way like when you are on the road, overnite at hotels, carrying less acc when traveling

The current delivery of Micro USB is limited to 500milliAmps due to the connector-size [ref : Wikipedia article about USB] - whereas Nokia states that the current through the Nokia DC connector is 800milliAmps : So the DC connector is 60% faster.

if you REALLY want to Bend-your-Head about the Charge Current here is the link to the "Nokia 2mm DC connector charging specification" :   http://www.herjulf.se/solar/charge-station/Nokia_2-mm_DC_Charging_Interface_Specification_v1_2_en.pdf

Actually, USB charging is better for Li-Ion batteries because it delivers current to the battery at a slower rate which ensures the cells get enough charge without damaging them. I've also found that the battery lasts a few hours longer after a full USB charge than mains charging.

Cheers.

Worzel.
