Hi all, I’m helping my wife figure some basics out on her new N8, and I have some questions. . . . As you’ll also see from some of my questions, the N900 is my main/only point of orientation.

--Maps: this looks to work differently than the very preloaded ovi maps on the N900, which also can work well completely offline as long as GPS is “seeing” the phone. 1. Is this b/c of the much lower RAM? 2. Maps for each state, country, etc. appear to need to be individually downloaded first if wanted without an internet/data plan connection (again, very different than the n900), so are these impressions correct? 3. Finally, as for downloading the individual maps, does anyone know where the map for Washington D.C. is?

--Apps general: 4. Again w/ the N900 as my only pt. of familiar reference for smartphones, what are the options for downloading free apps? (I can only see the Ovi store and something called TopApps.) 5. For ex., the N900 has a few different lists/sources of apps that can be downloaded from its “App Manager”—does the N8 have something like that? 6. As for TopApps: I cannot access that at all; instead I continue to get the following message: “This application requires an Internet connection and data charges may apply. If you have added topapps to the homescreen, please remove and restart it again. Accept all prompts to connect to the network.” 7. Does anyone know how to solve this? (I follow the instructions to restart, and of course I check that I do indeed have a connection via wifi.)

--Specific apps: Is there an old NES emulator app for the N8 like the N900? (Though I suppose it’d be somewhat different—or at least tricky—w/out the mini keyboard hardware for controls.) There are two other very interesting apps that I’ve seen on other smartphones that I wonder if are avail. for the N8: an app for the camera (though I’m not talking about editing after the fact) that allows for effects like old 70s style renderings, etc. and a voice recognition app that will type out into SMS texts whatever message you speak. 8. Does the N8 have any free apps like these two?

Obviously I don’t expect answers to all of these, but help on some would be very appreciated. Thank you so much,

Matt

Hope you have already solved some of the questions you had but if not here are my answers:

Maps

Ovi map can be used offline, you just have to download them onto your phone.  Since Ovi map covers a lot more area, you wouldn't want a map of Northern Europe, when you live in USA and never ever plan on traveling there.  You simply have to connect the N8 to Ovi Suite on your PC and download the maps you need through Ovi Suite.  And yes, Washington DC is in the list, just take a look at the map tab when you have your N8 connected to Ovi Suite.

Apps

Top apps are just the recommended apps Nokia recommend for that day, and it changes from day to day (I think it is based on the amount of download it has received).  You can browse different apps in "categories" at the top within Ovi Store.  Within each category, there are top free apps to choose from.  Of course you can find more by doing a search in the search tab at the top.

As to the error you are having, are you sure it is an error or is there a green download button you can press on the side?  If so, it is just a disclaimer that the app may use data or the download will use data.  Just hit download and get it install when you are on wifi to save on data from your mobile plan.

Specific apps

I'm not a big gaming buff, but to my knowledge, there is no emulator for the N8.  I could be wrong and ones that worked on the N97 MAY work on the N8.  There is no guarantee it will work.  There are a few great games you can download on this site for the N8, try those out!  If you did find an emulator which worked with the N8, please do share with us.  It would be great if there is one and you can hook up the HDMI cable to the TV and a keyboard to the micro SD connector on N8....perfect gaming console on the go!!

UPDATE::
Spoke too soon with regards to emulator, check this out:

Hope this help.
