In April, Nokia introduced its newest Symbian software update, called Symbian Anna, along with the launch of the Nokia E6 and the Nokia X7. At the Nokia Connection event in Singapore today, Nokia announced that it will start shipping Nokia N8s, E7s, C7s and C6-01s with Symbian Anna in July. If you already own one of these devices, you can download the software by the end of August.

Upgrading to a ‘new look’ phone is free and easy. You can update your device with your PC or over-the-air from the software updater in the phone. The Symbian Anna upgrade gives you a set of new icons, a faster web browser, improved text input and enhanced maps. In other words, your phone will get a free make-over, giving you a better experience while remaining reliable and easy to use.

One of the most anticipated enhancements in Symbian Anna is split screen view while typing, so users can see their message thread. There is also virtual portrait QWERTY for quick, one handed typing. And the web browser is faster and easier to use, delivering quicker page loads and improved navigation.

Ovi Maps has been refreshed with simpler and quicker search, new public transportation routes and check-in to Facebook, Twitter, Foursquare or local social networks. You can also share places via email and SMS, even with friends using non-Nokia phones.

Business users will benefit from instant messaging with Microsoft Communicator Mobile, email enhancements including full meeting request support, and true business grade security with hardware accelerated encryption. There is also easy and secure intranet access for people who want to get on their company intranet.

The social client has been improved as well. Now you can see people’s status updates in their contact card, as well as retweet and view your follower list in Twitter.

At Nokia Connection, Nokia also restated its commitment to Symbian. Nokia’s CEO Stephen Elop said in his keynote that over the next 12 months the company plans to bring up to 10 new Symbian-based smartphones to market.

Which Symbian Anna features are you the most excited about?

So Nokia is completely unchanged, we have talk of update in June then when June arrives suddenly the update is August.
I am so fed up with chase the update why can Nokia never deliver on a promise ?

Anna could be the best thing ever to happen to the N8 but by the time we have had 1 million broken delivery dates we will be so annoyed with Nokia that we will not care.

I'm not excited in the slightest about any of the supposed new " features " that come with Anna.
I think I speak for many when I say I couldn't care any less.
Considering the phone will be almost 12 months old before the update hits, most people will be onto their next device. New buyers of the N8 will of course have a different view point, as they haven't had to put up with the last year of nonsense coming from Nokia.

Slightly off topic, but Nokia have announced the new N9. They have also announced it will be the one and only device to feature MeeGo OS, so the platform and phone is effectively dead on arrival. Well done Nokia, well done.

i quite love my n8 just the way it is so any improvement is going to be a bonus hey? Ive had mine just over 2 months. Im alittle anxious tho, i updated the firmware and software on initial setup, and ive heard things about the possibility of losing stuff upon update. I have questions if anyone can help:
1- All my apps and media are in my mass memory, is that what gets affected or is it the phone memory?
2- Should i copy all my pics, videos and music to my memory card just in case?
3- What about apps, they cant be moved can they?
4- Do i take my memory card out when updating?
5- My contacts, should i save them to my sim?
6- I regularly do the 'back up' in the file manager and that goes on my memory card but im not even sure what that is, i select 'all'. Will that bring everything back, do i press 'restore' after update?
Sorry if it seems im clueless and paranoid but i have over 6 thousand media files in my phone, and ive never upgraded the firmware since putting the files in, i did it before. Can anyone help? Thanks in advance.
I am excited tho lol.

@nb4n8.

Best thing to do is to perform a back up using Ovi suite to your pc to preserve media and personal files. Don't bother with system settings though, just in case of corruption.
I wouldn't worry too much, as I've performed plenty of backups and not lost a thing in the process.

thankyou Worzel, that eases my mind alittle. Guess i shouldve mentioned that i dont have a pc. I'd still like to know about the backup and restore thing: i read about so many iphone users who 'restore' their phones and lose everything, i wonder if its the same thing, im always really careful when im in there coz the 'back up now' and 'restore' functions are right near each other!

I see. Best thing to do then is to make the back-up to an external SD card, remove it before the update and restore from it if needed, which I doubt you will need to do. As I said, the back-up rarely screws the phone up. It's worth mentioning that any paid for apps can be re-downloaded from the Ovi store at no extra cost if the worst comes to the worst.

All the best.

N8 will still have the best camera, better than N9.  Will Ana have .flac support like Meego?
