I don't know if this is just me but several times when I was talking to someone on the phone, with the phone in my left hand and placed around the ear, suddenly I couldn't hear the other side, or the person I was talking to hung up on me.

I couldn't figure out why the line keep dropping suddenly but yesterday I noticed on the phone that when the line is engaged, there are 2 buttons on the middle of the screen: On Hold, and End. What happened was as I was talking, my cheek touched the On Hold button and the line was put on hold, hence I could not hear the other person and vice versa (and the eventual line being dropped from the other side).

Has this happened to anyone or do people talk with their phone far enough away from their face that this hasn't happened yet?

Thanks, Phil. Glad to know that I'm not the only one!

I still have my old N97, which has resistive ouch screen, and I never had any problem with that, but with this capacitive screen on N8, the touch screen is far too sensitive.

First two times the caller terminated the call as she could not hear me and the funny thing is she had a right go at me for putting the phone down on her lol.
It took me a couple of minuets to suss out what was happening. far to sensitive, you would think the proximity sensor would disable the hold/end call icons when phone in use
Maybe the folk in Research and development dont ever try there own products, such a stupid simple error

yup, same damn thing happens to me, cheek keeps ending calls or putting people on hold... very annoying..

looked for a setting to see if phone would auto-lock once dial connection is made, so if i wanted to do anything i would need to slide the hold button. couldnt find such a setting..

But i am getting better at not cheek disconnecting!

When the phone is placed against your face, it doesn't disable button presses, so your cheek tends to hit the hold button from time to time.

It might be nice to have the screen disabled when the sensor turns off the screen.

Have just had this happen to me a couple of time today, and with some overseas calls I was expecting and were important.

Nokia tried too hard be everything to everybody using a clunky Symbian OS, and forgot the real reason for it's being...a phone.

I have tried hard to be loyal by opting for the N8 after my N95, and other previous Nokia Phones, but even though the camera is of a lesser spec, I am considering consigning the N8 to the bin and going for an iPhone. Too many websites can't be accessed, texting is a pox, and it just seems slow and clunky by comparison.

yeah.... you are all correct.

The proximity sensor is set far too close to the phone.  yet another BASIC issue with the phone.

I slide lock the phone EVERY call to stop it happening cos I will end up  testing it's bounceability soon if it happens again.

The proximity sensor is fine.  It just doesn't disable button presses which is the problem.  The screen shuts off but you can still use everything on the screen including hold and end call which can be accidently triggered by your cheek if not careful.

It does seem odd to keep key functionality when the screen is turned off.  It seems very intuitive to disable the screen and key functions together because you can't really press buttons you can't see anyways.  I'm actually quite surprised it was overlooked because I would have assumed a number of testers accidently did this themselves.

The fix is both simple for the code and for the end user.  The code should be fixed, but...we as users can very easily just hold the phone at a slight angle to prevent this from happening.  I no longer do it because I now know better and avoid it from the start.  I'm not letting Nokia off the hook though.  This really should have been addressed in the code.

It seems this is now fixed with the Apps 1.0 update via SW update on the phone as of 1-12-2011.

Hi, new to this forum and new to owning an N8 having had it for just over a week.  I too am finding the whole ending of the call because my cheek presses the hold button really frustrating.  And I have downloaded and installed the Apps update which hasn't fixed the problem at all.

Any further advice would be beneficial to me.

Kind regards  Grin

Actually, I found that the first app update has fixed the problem but the new 1.1 firmware apparently doesn't have that fix in it...   Sad Why am I not surprised by that. My put-on-hold bug got fixed for a while but now I get a hang-up instead. Like they didn't block the red button during call and close to face....   Angry  I'm angry at Nokia now...

I too am accidentally putting people on hold with my cheek and it's really p*ssing me off. I've got other things to think about when on a call besides the angle of my phone in relation to the axis of the rotating earth when it cross aligns with my face!

My N8 might be getting flying lessons soon.

If anyone has a fix for this t'would be much appreciated. I can't believe Nokia has made this fundaMENTAL blunder...... I'm glad there's others here with same problem, I was starting to get a complex that my cheeks were fatter than anybody elses.

This is a problem, that I should imagine will be fixed in PR2.0??
In the mean time you can lock the phone with the slider once a call has been made or received, and still talk as normal. Doing this you will not be cut off or put on hold.

Not ideal I know but if your expecting important calls then this will stop you being cut off etc....

 Hope this helps?

Got the same problem. To a point that it drives me nuts. Why don't you read ANYTHING about this in the REVIEUWS of the Nokia 8! I find this a major problem. I bought more a camera than an phone. I wanted a phone but I practically can't use it because of this syndrom.  The call is put on hold CONSTANTLY. I've had it repaired and it still does. Now it also ends the calls like in your case @kuytafal: Actually, I found that the first app update has fixed the problem but the new 1.1 firmware apparently doesn't have that fix in it...    Why am I not surprised by that. My put-on-hold bug got fixed for a while but now I get a hang-up instead. Like they didn't block the red button during call and close to face....     I'm angry at Nokia now...
Now I have a hung up too!!! Undecided
@mvw2: In the store they told me that the problem of my phone was that the screen should turn off. In my case it didn't. Now I understand through your post that this doesn't help either because you still can activate the put on hold button. Maybe even more so, as it has turned invisible with a turned off screen. Anyway my 'repaired' Nokia 8 has been returned with the screen still NOT turning off during a call.
