I sometimes use my N8 for navigation when on a long journey. But my problem is that the car charger it came with can't charge it fast enough and after a couple of hours it goes to power saving mode (when it reaches 10%). This makes it rather difficult to navigate as the screen goes dark every couple of seconds.

I've set it to offline mode and it lasts a bit longer, but not nearly long enough.

Is there a way to charge it faster?

This is not normal.  I use my N8 with a full charge to navigate for several hours (about 3 two weeks ago) without being connected to a charger and it does just fine.  With a charge cord attached it should run indefinitely. 

I would check to see if you have something else running in the background that you are not aware of which is running you down.  Nokia Maps should not do that by itself.
