Hey,

I tested the USB Otg function and was pretty disappointed of the N8, as it seems not to support NTFS fornats of USB sticks and harddrives.

Is there any way to fix this? Any ideas?

I've got the same problem. None of my memory Sticks are compatible. I've read that only FAT formatted sticks are recognised by OTG. FAT (or FAT16) went out with Windows 95,  I can't find any way of formatting them so that they are recognised. Anybody got any ideas???

Thanks,  Dick

N8 is compatible with FAT32.

Best Regards,

Mit freundlichen GrĂ¼ssen,

Mauricio

Mauricio:
The function USB OTG definately does not seem support FAT32. The normal USB connection from N8 to computer supports it but from a Stick to the N8 using OTG doesn't.
How have you got it to work?

The Nokia N8 does support FAT32, but I've read that it does have problems with various USB sticks, seems it's a bit hit and miss which wiill work and which wont...I can confirm my 8Gb Cruzer Micro stick works formatted to FAT32...

Thanks Robiko, I'm going to try another make and also one that is smaller than my present 16GB ones. I've noticed that all mine are USB 3.0 don't know whether that's the problem.

Could be Dick, although I'm under the impression that USB3.0 negotiates at the speed of the USB port, so USB 3.0 would negotiate at USB2.0 speeds if that is the available port...

Just ran a test on the 3 sticks I have, all formatted to FAT32, both 4 and 8Gb sticks (USB2.0) work, but a really old 128Mb stick (probably USB1.1) didn't...

Later I'll format a 1Tb external hard drive (USB3.0) to FAT32 to see if that works...

Sooner Nokia sorts out this NTFS file translation the better as most sticks/disks are now NTFS...

So I'm now 1 stage further on. Having had the USB OTG tested and found to be in order I've got hold of a 4GB stick WHICH WORKS  Grin  Tongue  Kiss.
The guy that tested the cable told me that the FAT32 is no problem but at present the size is restricted to 4GB. This will be corrected/uprated with the next Firmware update. WHATEVER . . .

Anyway, thanks guys for your help. I've now got 4GB OTG, and that's a lot better than 0GB  Grin

Test results: All drives formatted to FATxx where applicable...

Western Digital 1Tb external drive: works
Nokia N95 8GB mass storage: works
Canon Powershot A580 digital camera: doesn't work
Garmin Nuvi 310 GPS: doesn't work
Agfa Photo SD card 1Gb (through HP USB digital drive): works
SanDisk Ultra 2 HCSD card 4Gb (through HP USB digital drive): doesn't work*
Sony portable CD burner: doesn't work**
Micro USB optical mouse: works (but lags)
SanDisk Cruzer 8Gb USB stick: works
PNY 4Gb USB stick: works
PNY Attache 128Mb USB stick: doesn't work

*This is probably due to the HP USB digital drive not reading SDHC cards
**This is probably due to the N8 not able to read CD\DVD file formats

Robiko, thanx that's really good stuff you've got there. It looks to me as if my Sticks(the 8GB & 16GB) are simply incompatible from the manufacturer side and not thru' their size and FAT.

I'm not sure even if it's from a manufacturing side, on one forum I read that some-one had problems with the SanDisk Cruzer 8Gb whereas I haven't had a problem...perhaps try reformatting with various FAT formats to see if that works...

I wonder if there'll be a kind of certification in the future "Certified for Nokia N8" for USB drives/products, otherwise it's a bit of a pain to buy a product only to find it doesn't work...

I've tried all the Formatting and also Partioning, with different sizes and FAT's nothing worked on these sticks. A friend in Frankfurt also has a N8 and he's got the same problem with his sticks.
It would be interesting to know whether this occurs all across the globe or whether its only restricted to Germany for instance. Maybe there are different Firmware versions here?? Who knows??

I really don't think it is restricted to the Germany, because all my gadgets are bought in Germany.

And they worked w/o problem.

I take at least one trip per year to Stuttgart (I'd say, is the city in Germany where Gadgets have its lowest price) and to Metzingen (http://www.outletcity-metzingen.com/en/welcome)

BTW these are usually work related trips...

Best regards,

Mauricio

i made 3 tests with wireless laser mouses,

2 from logitech dont work
1 from cheap brand like MITSAI , works perfect.  Cool
well , the lag is normal i suppose. cord-mouse or wireless the "lag" is the same, but workable. Smiley

BTW , i have 8gb cruzer with fat32 and works good. NTFS for big files.. NOT:. maybe in future?!? would be sweet for the 4.2Gb mkv's ^^

up..up
well, for the interested, now i tested a wireless connection with a combo, a pen which coonects both keyboard and mouse, and works good! its great to connect in a tv and work with all the stuff like net and send sms, even the multimedia keys from the keyboard like volume , music controls etc.. works
GJ nokia to made this supports possible.
