My N8 turned it's self off & won't restart after only 48hrs of me owning, battery power was fine, it had been charged, it just shut down & refuses to restart. Not going to bother with trying hard restart, it's going back.

I will probabaly give N8 another shot & get a direct replacement, but Nokia loyalty is wearing very thin,  more trouble with replacement & I'm of in search of Droid or iPhone.

I hope to be able to leave some positive posts in the futre!

Is this an isolated incident or has anyone els experianced the same?

I did encounter yr problem as well, my fault actually, i did not fully charge this set and it hangs and off automatically after a few games and videos. So i went to Nokia centre and they actually change a new set for me after going through my phone.

Awaiting my relplacement handset, currently on backorder. As I knew i had to wait I tried turning the old unit on again, it started and I was able to use for about 45mins & then it hung before it died againf. After 10 mins it would turn on again this went on for while then it would just vibrate when i tried to turn on but never actually start. I've seen this mentioned on other such sites, seems it's reasonably common sadly.

I had exactly the same problem on friday. I turn it on and it was working fine, turned it off put my sim card in, then turned it back on, then it crashed, turned off and wouldn't turn back on or charge up for a good half hour, so i sent it back today Angry

Mine works fine for almost a month now. Yet it would be nice to know what causes the problem. Production faults? Maybe a setting or an app that sucks the baterry flat so fast? Mine did behave a bit like it because it was constantly checking for new emails, over wifi or 3G. Once I changed that it is very good, I only recharge at night now. Anybody have a clue what goes wrong? Any known app out that measures power use?

Battery life varies a lot.  I can drain mine doing about the same thing in under 2 days or 4 days just depending on what's running.

I doubt the phones are broken at all.  If the battery is low, the phone will not power on.  It will not power on just from being plugged in.  It has to gain enough charge.  With a dead battery, I do find this to be longer than a half hour.  Also depending on what you were dinking around with, you may end up having to do a hard reset to get it to come back on.  Hold it for 8 seconds for the buzzing.  Then restart by holding it down for a few seconds and waiting for the buzzing.  Depending on how low it is, it may not boot up.  Also the bootup isn't short, so you may very well wait a minute just to get the Nokia hands animation.

The one thing I do not like about this phone is that it doesn't really tell you much about what's going on.  There are no indicators of what it's doing.  Even the charge indicator doesn't really update.  It sits there saying 10% forever.  I wish it would have a boot up loading screen, an "action" icon of some sort, maybe even use the charge led as a "harddrive reading" kind of indicator to mimic a computer when it's doing something.  It just doesn't tell you anything.  You sort of just wait.

I think most of you are just not very patient.

Same here Sad   ....  I bought 2 N8's a silver and a green.... The Green was a Paperweight out of the box.. Wouldn't start up at all.. It would sometimes vibrate when I would press the power button but would never actually boot...  I let it charge at multiple locations overnight to no avail....  My wifes happy with her silver one but it looks like I'm going to have to wait for my Green one since its on backorder...

Patience is not the issue here I'm affraid, my paticualr phone is dead, still awaiting a replacement, they are are on backorder here in the UK also. Vodafone tell me they have had a large amount of the same issue with the first batch that went out. I hope my new one comes soon & I become a satifiead N8 owner, watch this space!

Hmm, bought mine the first day it came out.

It was weird starting out because it doesn't power on.  You plug it in and it still won't power on.  My previous phones could be put on the charger, wait a minute, and you could start them as normal.  With this if the battery is dead, it takes a while.  Plus you're never quite sure if it's even charging at first.  I too wondered what was wrong with it.  I couldn't even tell if it was off or on and charging or if it really mattered.  I don't think I ever got mine on for the first couple hours of ownership.  It won't start if the battery's too low, and even if it does start, the bootup is lengthy so you might not wait long enough and start fiddling with the power button again.  It's goofy and really doesn't help a new user.  It would have been nice for Nokia to send the phone with the battery charged.  Then a new user could at least just hit the power button for a couple seconds and get it to start right out of the box.

I just question how many people really have an issue or simply aren't sure what the phone's doing.  Every time the battery dies it's the same thing.  You can make it vibrate but aren't sure if you just turned it on or off.  You can't power it up because the battery's too low.  You can do a hard reset but still it won't do anything till the bettery's charged.  The user remains relatively uninformed, and that's kind of a bad thing.

There's definitely a charging issue here... There are several reports of N8's not booting up even after lengthy overnight charges...

With every new product release there's always going to be a few lemons... Antennagate, Glue not drying completely under screens, constant reboots....  I remember buying the 1st gen Xbox when it came out and it wouldn't load up any games discs out of the box....  I had to call customer service and they walked me through a special key press in the menu to reboot and reformat my system which solved my problems.....  I"m thinking our N8 boot issue is something more on the hardware side.....  Cry .... Oh well,, at least my wife's N8 is working,,, that saves me a little headache.....

As I am still awaiting my replacement N8 I thought I'd try out suggestions regarding the battery, I charged the battery for while & then it started, I then left it until charging was complete, I started using it, then while scrolling through Ovi Maps it froze & turned off again (this is with full charge), I was not able to restart no matter how long I held the start button or how patient I was. I'm sure now I have left the phone for a few hours if I retuned to it & tried starting It would do so, but I doubt it would remain functioning for long. What has been said about battery charging may well be true in some cases, It all makes some sort of sense, sadly however I do think there are good percentage of N8's that are genuine lemons.

My new N8 is arriving tomorrow, I'll fully charge before attempting anything & see how I get on this time.

mvw2 has made some good points, , should it really be this much trouble.I'll compare your experiences with my new handset.

At the end of the day this just a phone, should it really be this much trouble to use?

As a point of interest, my original N8 arrived with 50% charge & I was able to turn on & use from the box, I did however connect to the charger immediately.

The big thing is this phone isn't very visual about what it's doing.  It could be stupid stuff like it not charging when you think it is charging.  You may leave it hooked up overnight and may not have charged at all.  Realize that it isn't just the phone but the PC too and the USB software.  It might be that the software didn't install properly or messed up (requiring a PC reboot to work).  It's easy to blame the phone because it's new and doing something unexpected, but with all things like this, there can be a LOT of potential issues.  You sort of have to troubleshoot first and weed out all the possibilities.

I do bring this up because my laptop messed up the USB driver install the first time.  I had to manually remove it, restart the PC, and have it find the phone again and install the driver.  I've had the PC not recognize the phone once and not start the charging.  Things like this happen, and it's not just the phone.  Software is stupid sometimes.  It's why we have the joy of restarting Windows from time to time.  We may even need to do a hard reset of the N8 from time to time due to weird bugs.  Growing up in the PC age has taught me that software is buggy, and a lot of things fail for a lot of reasons.  There are several things working together just to make the phone charge its battery.

Are some phones bad?  Probably.  Are a number of the phones sent back probably fine?  Probably.
