Hi al..
I am a die hard fan of nokia .Very exited to but nokia n8.
I went Happily to take live demo of n8 and book it.But i was shocked a lot...
When i tested the camera.. the brightness of the image it produces is very less such that when shooted at a distant even the person's face is unrecognizable.
I took several shoots, changed all settings, even went to another  show room.the same.Even the pic quality is not good when zoomed in starts pix-elating,some noise in image quality.
I know N8 has best camera and spec ,But i cant believe the quality it produces in real.
What is this.Is that it the quality or both the n8 i examined are fault pieces (no way both are fresh pieces)?
Or the pieces that my state/Country is getting is not such quality manufacturing.?
Because none of the review or post have said like the camera quality exp is bad.I my self could nt believe the quality.
[next time i will try to include the samples.]

Kindly provide your valuable comments and solutions

Interesting!  I have had some odd troubles with the camera, but general picture quality has not been one.  For example, I tried it in a number of situations including extreme low light and it worked very, very well.  (Note that I am a photography buff and have both a Nikon D2h and a D2x so quality matters to me).

Then I tried the camera with the flash on and I was appalled by the results.  The pictures were not just washed out and with very uneven lighting, they were completely unusable as pictures.  I went back to no flash and everything was well.  I finally decided that the flash was bad and that I would have to send the phone back.  Of course, you don't send a phone back before testing everything (to make sure you have told the manufacturer all that is wrong).  In doing so, I tried the camera in flash only mode (still bad) then went back to no flash.  Finally I put the flash in auto mode again and flash pictures came out very well.  I haven't had that sort of problem since.  Why?  Who knows!  However, given my experience, it might be worth trying all the modes etc. before deciding the camera is bad.

I would also try downloading some of those pictures to your computer and look at them in a good editing program such as Photoshop.  You may be surprised by the result.

Regards,

I demoed the N8 in two diffent shops last weekend. When trying the camera in the first shop I was also disappointed with the image quality, but just before I returned the phone I noticed that the protective films were still on...
In the other shop the phone was without protective films and the photo I took of my son there was impressive! He was standing a few meter away from me, and when zooming into the image, single hairs on his head became clearly visible and focused! This was indoors in a shop!

Believe it or not, read about people "testing" the camera before realizing the film was still over the lens.  Not saying that's your problem but...  Ted, how are you stabilizing your camera in low-light situations?  Just a firm hand?

Yeah, I just hold it carefully.  I've been amazed at how effective it is - and this is just in auto program mode!

The picture quality is poor in my Phone also.
I too realized that protective covering is on it. With flash the pictures become dull. But without flash the pictures are bright & perfect.
I too think that protectve covering is creating the problem with flash.
I haven't removed my protective film b'coz i'm waiting  to get response from someone who has removed the protective film.
I request if someone has tried it then kindly post your response.

I get rather remarkable picture quality from the camera.  I printed up a picture last night and my wife was amazed at the quality.  It was every bit as good as we would get from our point and shoot cameras (which are both high end: one Nikon and one Canon G11).  No, it isn't quite what I would get from my pro-level DSLRs, but you wouldn't expect that.

Interesting camera shoot-out between N8, Samsung Pixon 12 and a Sony DSC-HX5v Cyber-shot camera.

It's just protective film which is causing trouble with you guys. Yes it was the same problem with me when I used the camera very first day. But my self realized that how the camera would do good when some thing, which fades light on it, is protecting the camera.

It's just logical that the Protective Film would cause terrible results when you use flash, because it will emit the light on the film which will fade your picture...

I just removed the protective film and here you go. I got the picture results as well as they were supposed to be.

If you are thinking not to waste the protective film you can still reuse it for a few times, you can test it your self..

I just have uploaded two different samples on flickr with and without the protective film.
You must want to see that

Shot with protective film applied on the camera.

Why would you not take the film off?!  Cheesy

I will say one thing with the N8 settings.  Other cameras do seem to be geared to offer a more vivid image.  The N8 keeps the coloring a little tamer.  A number of reviews like to use the phrase "true to life" or "natural" which is good.  The N8 always has the Vivid setting if you do want a little more shot of color though, and you can fiddle with contrast and exposure to get the kind of picture you want.  I think in time we will see some software mods that open up the settings even further.  There's already a mod to get rid of the stock compression, and with the camera installed on this phone, I think there will be some software development done to really push the camera, not only in capability but also user adjustability.

The stock settings on the N8 give a result that I call a "Nikon look" because it resembles the somewhat understated (natural?) image favored by Nikon. (You could also refer to it as a more "Agfalike" image for those who go back to film days.

The vivid settings on the N8 give a result that I call a "Canon look" because it resembles the greater than life images favored by Canon.  (You could also refer to it as a more "Kodaklike" image for those who go back to film days.

You can get either result on the N8 pretty easily.  (As a Nikon shooter, I am pretty happy with the stock soup.  By contrast, my wife is a Canon shooter - and she can just keep her hands off of my N8<g>!)

TED, about you getting bad quality with the flash. I had a few images like this...  white shadow over the image, washed out - then i has some perfect pics. Couldnt understand why.

Found out the reason - and you can easily test it yourself.   Its yours left index finder extending over the top of the cameras flash. If you grip the phone and your inderx finger goes over the edge, you get the washed out imagine, pull your finger back and grip the phone with on your finger tip - and your back to razor shark images.

The light from the flash reflects off your finger back into the lens giving you the washed out images.
