Okay am I missing something, or does the N8 not allow you to sort and play songs by artist?

All my albums labeled "greatest hits" are stored together making it impossible to find and play.

Like in any mp3 player,
You need to tag your mp3s first
Try this:
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=Y376ZFXW
I used it and it works fine...
Cheers

If the various albums are called just "Greatest Hits" then as the music player displays visually in the "Albums mode" all artists with an album "Greatest hits" they will all appear in the same "album"
If however when you tag the tracks and tag the album name for example "Greatest Hits - Rod Stewart" or "Greatest Hits - Eurythmics"  then each album will appear as a separate collection with its own image (assuming youve added the album picture to the tag also).

It doesent matter what folder or what the folder is called. The music player does NOT group music by folders, it groups it by the tags on the mp3 themselves (as all GOOD players should do)
Grouping music in folders is only a way us humans can keep track of things easily as our brains cannot scan files as quick as the music player.
If you want to have all your tracks in one folder, it makes no odds, the music player will still group them according to the tag identification within the individual mp3 tracks.
If you want to show all the tracks as one "group" you can either edit the Album tag on every track (which would then have wrong information as regards the true track data) , or simply change the view of the music player to show "songs", which will list the tracks in alphabetical name of the song title.
If you wish to be truly adventurous & dont really care about the genre of the tracks, you can edit the genre tag data to whatever you want & then use the music player options list the music by genre to create your own individual moods or collections

I don't see how to do this either. Sounds like the answers above have got confused as to what the original poster meant by this. No there is no way to play just songs by one artist without some hassle at least. There should really be an option to do this but looks like nokia missed it out. I guess manually creating a play list is the only alternative.

The original poster stated the problem was because albums were named the same.
ie "greatest hits" a solution was given.
Artists and Albums are one group in the nokia and listed aphabetically in the index.
IF files are tagged correctly, complete albums can be played in one go.
unfortunately you cannot select 2 albums by same artist, however you can create playlists & add album tracks to it.
Alternative ly as I mentioned above, you can be really adventurous & rename the genre tag with the artist, which would then give you the playing option under Genre.
Not really that difficult, but there again you cant please all of the people all of the time.
