The Nokia N8 seems (to me personally) to be outstanding in terms of the hardware. However, having never used a smartphone before I would like to know what are the advantages (and disadvantages) of Symbian when compared to Android or iOS.

One obvious advantage is definitely in the number of apps that are available for each platform (there seem to be very few for Symbian3).

What do you guys think?

You know....

If I knew then (when I was purchasing my N8) what I know now, I would not have purchased the N8. I would've bought a BlackBerry instead.

Too many bugs/glitches with the N8 still (in my opinion). I'm sure in time, that firmware updates will fix these numerous problems but that's some time in the future; when? Who knows?

Just my opinion...I'm sure many would disagree.

So far i have had no real problems with my N8, everything works fine but i am already used to symbian (my previous 3 phones all had symbian). I have had to restart him more then my previous phones already though (once a week/2 weeks or something).
The camera of this phone kicks ass of all other phones same with the free navigation with downloadable maps.

If u dont care about this 2 points, I have played with a samsung galaxy s, and i have to admit everything works smooth, fast and easy. Its just what you expect and want from a phone.

@ Snowhite0901 -- I'm just curious, how do you find the quality of the pictures? In particular, I'm referring to pictures with the flash. I took some pictures and posted them online to demonstrate what I'm experiencing. Not sure if it's user error or if this is normal.

I've noticed a white fuzz (like noise or static) whenever I use my flash. If you wouldn't mind, please take a look at some of these pictures I've taken and let me know what your thoughts are on the quality of the images. Is that white noise/static normal? Do you have the same problem? I find that 9 times out of 10, I'm better off not using the flash.

Personally, I get good shots with my n8, though flash usually isnt something I need seeing as lightsources usually are plentiful.

As for symbian^3 vs android etc... Iunno, only having used the n8 as far as symbian3 goes and had little play with iphone4 and droid (unless nitdroid for n900 counts Wink ).

But I will say that its pretty snappy, homescreen changing is fast if you disable the theme animation thing which is useless anyways, it multitasks well enough, the webkit browser isnt as horrible as people make it out to be, but hell... thats getting a replacement next fw update anyways, same with qwerty for portrait mode which enables swype..

As for "better than", I dont know. For me, personally, it fits the bill as good as any phone when it comes to UI. Only UI I prefer over it for a mobile device is Maemo5, so lets hope Nokia takes some cues from their Maemo team when they keep updating symbian^3 as theyve promised.

tldr: I dont know, I like it.

Had mine for 3 months, its been into the care centre and back to Nokia and still does not work, I have yet to make a phone call where the pice of junk does not switch off and then back on.

Yes, noone other than nokia have the occational faulty device... Mine works flawlessly. And Nokia is picking up pace atm. I mean hell, if this february FW update doesnt deliver, Ill agree, go get gingerbread. But personally, I enjoy the n8 as a phone. Fast, no troubles, bit hard to use browser (which is being fixed in february fw update). the GUI reminds me of symbian s60v5 (apparently being changed in february fw update), I havent found an email client that can handle my hotmail account yet (mobile documents claim to support it soon, as doesnokia mail iirc?), it takes great photos and video, it lacks a bit at the social part compared to Maemo 5 (fully integrated seamless fb chat/msn/etc into contacts and conversations)... what else... Oh yeah, it doesnt have Hermes (which it should have, IMO).

Personally, Id love to see a few changes to be more like Maemo 5 in several regards. Browser, multitasking, fb/msn chat integration, home screen freedom. But overall I really like the N8.

@YMS_1975 Hmm i havent tried taking the same picture with or without flash but i see on your pics what you mean. It is pretty normal though that a camera compensates for its own flash, and if I check out your photo without flash it wasnt necessary to flash.
The flash is more for darker conditions. I tried to make some photo's in a discotheque with flash, and some in a room too dark not to use flash and I think it was fine. The one outside is a little bit pixeled because the ISO value automaticaly went too high (I would like to have more control about that). You can't expect a phone to be a exactly as good as  a good normal camera in my opinion but I think the pictures arent that bad. For my real good pics i have a real good Nikon camera, and for the fast shots i got my nokia. perfect match.

@Slai why the normal mail application for hotmail is not good enough for you?

Cause it claims "Unable to connect with settings provided" when the settings are good (email adress and password), thus wont create the mailbox.

The iPhone was too expensive for me (I did not want any phone with a contract, and even with a contract it was on the steep side). As for Android phones, the new phones that I considered were Galaxy S, Desire HD (too large), Desire (OK Camera, Poor Batter Life). I know the OS is more exciting (what with frequent updates) and the app market would have been fun to explore (with a large choice).

However, I ordered a N8 (very affordable price, compared to other smartphones, without a contract). Plus, it provides me with an amazing camera. I tried the phone at the store as well, it felt more than decent to me (the Iphone did feel loads better, not the android).

I just hope it lasts the distance.

hehe i hope you find yourself comfortable with you choice. Like I said, I think you made the right choice.

@Slai: Have had the same prob after i deleted it once. You should try again a few times, then it works great.

Had mine 3 months, wouldn't swap it. Like most phones there are pluses and minuses, but no phone is perfect (don't listen to steve Smiley )

BTW. if your flash photos look "washed out", the flash is bouncing off you finger. I had the same problem, but searched around and found out about the "finger" problem. Thought it was a joke at first, but I am now producing almost perfect flash photos. Better than my compact digital camera. If you can spend a bit of time learning the n8, it will pay you back. If you want instant gratification, then there are better fruit based phones. Spend the time learning/configuring/installing etc, and you will go leaps and bounds ahead of the competition.

PS. I've used pretty much all the major phones available, and would still rate the n8 as the best (for me).

I fully appreciate this, my biggest cripe is not that phone does not work sh1t happens but Nokias stick our head sand and hope he goes away attitude to fixing or replacing it.

Anyway all sorted now (eventually) they have a agreed to replace my handset, I just hope the new one works better than the old one, it should not be to hard to achieve.

Ah yeah, that makes sense. Personally Ive never had a problem at the nokia stores myelf when having issue with a phone, but I could just be really lucky =) .

Also, I have no experience dealing with the other brands vendors, so service on an iphone or a google n1 could be prime in comparison for all I know.

Even without a flash you pictures looks horrible. Maybe your lens is dirty? Because it looks like it is not clean. Thats a little minus that camera is not covered with something, like was previously mine C905. And it constantly gets dirty.. So try cleaning it.

Thats the pictures that N8 can do.
As for the OP.. I have mine N8 about month now too, and i'm fully happy with it, and don't regret it.
About OS advantages.. As for now - android > Symbian, because now android is on hype now, many developers, many android phone buyers, many games and etc etc, buut its all about what you need. N8 had the hardware i needed, and symbian is great too, there is apps, there is games too, android phones had android, but their hardware is kinda shitty for that price that i wanted to buy N8(i was choosing N8 vs HTC Desire, but desire has just too many minuses, and that one big plus(android) is not enough). Soo in the end.. Its all about price and what you need from the phone Smiley
