Mine just came in too and it is remarkable.  My daughter has an iPhone and this is the first Nokia that really competes with it.  I'm glad I waited and didn't buy the N97 mini.

Yes, I have a few of questions.  I am about to replace my Android phone which I found to be very disappointing.

1) Does the N8 have a straight forward bluetooth file transfer ability?
2) Does the IMAP/POP email client allow you to download, save and forward ANY files?  (In other words, not just pictures and music).
3) Is there any kind of "Office" application that allows you to read Word and PDF docs?
4) How good is the voice dialing?
5) How good is the speaker phone function?

Thanks guys/gals

I can answer a few of your questions.

First, I haven't actually used the blue tooth file transfer facility so I can't speak to that.

Second, I have used the POP 3 client and I have downloaded a number of files of various types: PDF, DOC, JPG at least.  They download quickly and open fine with the included Office reader application.  I upgraded the office reader application to the Super Pluperfect Extreme Deluxe version (about $15 US) and it will edit files, but it is not good at scaling the files so that you can see a whole line of text that you are editing.  I was hoping to use this for work, but it will not be of much use for real editing.  I used to use PC Docs on a Palm Treo and it worked much better.  (I could do real editing of legal documents on the Palm).  Hopefully there is a better solution out there.

Third, I haven't tried the voice dialing so I can't speak to that.

Fourth, I tried the speaker phone and I liked it.  I am just one person, though, and your needs/wants may not match mine.

Having said all that, let me mention one pretty obvious fact.  At the present time there are almost no apps actually written for Symbian 3.  As a result you are loading apps written for the old operating system and, consequently, the old devices.  As more apps/widgets come on line designed around Symbian 3, I think the usability will improve dramatically.

Ted,

One more question: the bane of Android phones is market applications forcing data roaming, over-riding the menu selection to shut off data connections.  I assume there is no issue killing data connection/data roaming.

you seem to have a fair amount of control in that area.  You can set up the way you use data your home network one way and a different way when roaming.

For example on your home network you can set it to automatic, always ask (ie before connecting a data link) or Wi Fi only.  You have the same choices when roaming.  So, if you set roaming to always ask or Wi Fi only, you would appear to be protected.  The default on roaming data is always ask.

I hope this helps!

Thanks.  Hopefully there will be an app allowing UMA (which Tmobile exploits on some phones, including some Nokia).  But, placing my order today... do I have the guts to get blue?

If you like blue, go for it.  It's nobody's business but yours!

Bluetooth transfers work very well. I forgot all about bluetooth in my iphone years, because apple restricted the use. I it still quite outrageous that you pay so much for an iphone and then they mainly decide what you are NOT allowed to do with it. Just imagine your car dealer talking like that! Anyway, I took a picture and somebody wanted it. My first impulse was to ask for his email address... No, he said, use bluetooth. Simple. He got the picture in a flash, with bluetooth. Worked perfectly. There are some things I miss on the N8, but hey, not all developers have yet received their test device I guess....

What about UPnP.  I can't believe they didnt include that app.  How and I suppose to connect to my
network and download media.  Or play it from my network. I use Tversity or simplecenter.  Does anyone know how I could use this with the n8.

I wasnt that pleased with the FM Transmitter.  reception wasn't very clear.

I have a question!

One feature I found surprisingly useful on my old Nokia N82 was that you could set it to 'say' the name of an incoming caller along with ringing, using synthesised speech. This was particularly useful if I was using a handsfree kit as it was my only way of telling who was calling before answering.

Is this feature still available on the N8? And if so, have they improved the legibility of the synthesised speech at all? The N82's speech did kind of sound like a drunken Finn with a blocked nose Wink

The say callers name option is available as well as voice control. I did not test it. I keep people in my contacts who I certainly do not want to call, and my old iphone would always misinterpret me and call one of those!

The feature is available.  I don't use it because it uses resources for something that is not that important to me.

I have 3G and use it all the time.  Check to see whether it is set to use 3G in the network settings.  If it is, you probably have a set up problem.  You would have to check with T-Mobile on that.  I am on AT&T and it worked fine right out of the box.
