You raise a good question and one that I won't be able to answer definitively until I get my phone (I pre-ordered, though I got a notice yesterday that it is now in order status).

Having said that, there are several indicators that Symbian 3 will be backward compatible for the most part.  First and foremost, Nokia is advertising that there are thousands of apps available for it.  How could there be thousands of apps available for it unless they are referring to apps already available on the earlier operating system?  Second, some of the apps that they show in promotional pictures are available for the N95 (heck, they were written for the N95).  Third, they are trying to compete with iPhone and Android phones with this new version of their operating system.  If they weren't able to claim to have thousands of apps available from the get go, they won't be able to compete.  Apple's "we've got an app for that" really works with consumers.  My daughter switched to an iPhone from an N series largely because she was enamored of the app based interface that is offered on the iPhone.  As you probably know, many of the iPhone apps really aren't apps at all.  Many are just a specific, limited purpose interface onto the internet (such as an "app" that will provide you with the weather in any city in the world - wow!)  You can get the same result in Google, but it takes more sophistication to do so.
