The only thing that will keep me from buying this phone is that it doesn't has divx support meaning it won't play .avi
in the future will there be update that will allow the n8 to read .avi format?
oh yea and another thing can the n8 reads videos that have a resolution of 720x480 or higher?

yea but on wikipedia it doesnt say avi is accepted, furthermore, people who had prototype of n8-00 said they had to convert the files
heres the source of info :http://mynokiablog.com ; and here its stated that it converts the files by istelf without any other software. http://www.symbianfrance.com/2010/07/07/video-nokia-n8-le-lecteur-video/
it does play .mkv tho which is nice

Here you go buddy; Damian Dinning, who is the Senoir Manager of the Solutions Planning division has reportedly confirmed that the Nokia N8 will have DivX playback.

I've been playing .avi files I downloaded (x-factor, strictly, and movie files) on my N8 without problems or needing to do conversion.

I wanted to try playing .mkv file but I have a file which is over 4Gb in size, and it couldn't be copied onto the device, hence I couldn't try it.

I felt the need to join this forum at long last to reply to this.

Why couldnt you copy the file accross? I have a 720p mkv copy of avatar on my N8 that is like 6.5gig and it runs perfectly.

I will say though I have the whole first series of the ricky gervais show tv show on my n8 in avi format and although they are all the same format 2 of them wont play. I have not looked into why yet though.

This is the great thing actually that stopped me from switching to the iphone4 when I got my N8 3 days ago. I discovered the ease of transferring my .avi tv shows and movies. I just dropped in the very handy USB mass storage and they all played great. I also have one converted to a divx and it played as well. IMO though there's not much difference in quality between divx and avi and so I'm very satisfied having my files in avi. My mkv video though did not play. There's the audi but no picture. Maybe too large for the phone. But at its screen size, avi and divx are more than adequate.

Did you copy it to the phone's Mass Memory/Micro SD/USB flash? Did you use ovi suite to transfer? I tried my flash drive that was formatted in NTFS and the phone said the drive is corrupted. Tried Fat32, but the max file size for Fat32 is 4GB. So how did you play your 6GB mkv file?

Grazie

Just used my computer to navigate to the mass memory. And copied it across. It plays fine. I have also tried the USB on the go and that played AVIs fine too.

In light of recent threads I am now, right at this minute gonna fine as many file formats as I can and see if I can find anything that doesnt play.

How did you play a 6.5GB file. Did you split them. From what I've tried and read there is a 4GB max size due to only Fat32 support.

I can only play mkv files that was converted to mp4. I also asked Nokia support. MKV is not supported. Hopefully in the future they support NTFS and MKV.

I played several mkv-files and avi-(divx and xvid)files . Up to 720p, and in 16:9. Different formats caused problems..

No I am looking for a good file converter which supports 720p, HQ audio (at least 192 kBit/sec), with a "crop"-feature. If possible for free. Any idea?
